Moraine Lake in the summertime is next to impossible to get to if you don’t go in the wee hours of the morning. It is unfortunate because it’s a beautiful spot for photos, especially at sunrise. But Bronwyn and Kaleb were intent on having their engagement session at Moraine Lake, even though we had to wake up at about 2am. We drove down the long, winding road, our headlights lighting a path through the blackness of the night. Since the sun wasn’t even close to rising when we reached the parking lot, we took a short nap in our cars while we waited.
I kept peeking out the window at the peaks that tower above Moraine Lake, watching as they slowly came into view with the morning light. Before the sun came up, we started to walk up to the rock pile to get a view of Moraine and wait for the light. The water was a deep turquoise blue, that colour that draws visitors from all over the world. You never know what you’re going to get at Moraine for a sunrise. Sometimes it’s cloudy, sometimes it’s a perfect alpenglow on the peaks, and sometimes it’s foggy. But one thing for sure, is it’s always beautiful!
On this morning for Bronwyn and Kaleb’s engagement session at Moraine Lake, we didn’t get much alpenglow at all. But the water was absolutely still, and we had the most stunning soft light. We spent some time running around on the rocks above the lake, and got some epic shots for them. Bronwyn is from the USA, so she was in her glory being here in the Rocky Mountains in Alberta.
Engagement Photos with a Paddleboard on Moraine Lake
After we finished shooting at the rockpile, I suggested we head down to the shore of Moraine Lake to take some more engagement photos there. Just the day before, I had purchased my very own paddleboard! So we decided to pump it up and take it with us to the lake! How often do you get the opportunity to do engagement photos on a paddleboard, let alone in Moraine Lake in Banff!? Not often, so these two took advantage of it. It was a very cool morning, the water icy as we stepped in with our bare feet to push the board into the water. Bronwyn and Kaleb carefully climbed on together, and paddled off towards the beautiful peaks around them.
We had a blast, laughing, chatting with strangers, and getting some sweet shots. Check out these gorgeous photos from this sunrise engagement session at Moraine Lake!
