Wow, I’ve only been to Moraine Lake a couple of times. But this time it was really impressive. We were planning to do a hike up to Larch Valley/Sentinel Pass that morning. We woke up at 2:30am and my photographer friend Beth picked me up in Banff and we headed to Moraine. The parking lot fills up so fast, that we had to get there at 5am to make sure we got a spot! It was pouring rain.

We were getting a bit skeptical about how the weather was going to play out. So, we chilled in our vehicles for a couple of hours, observing other visitors and what their plans were with the wet, cold weather. Jaime and Mary were troopers, and were still game to get some sweet photos at Moraine Lake. They have been married for a short time, but were happy to come along and get a few more elopement photos at Moraine Lake

Since it continued to rain, we decided that it might be best not to hike, and a few hours in the rain in wedding clothes and cold wind may not be too enjoyable. So we hung around the lake instead, and was it ever moody! The clouds were hanging low around the peaks, and fog drifting through the spruce forests surrounding the lake. It was incredible. When we walked up to the top of the rock pile, there weren’t many tourists around yet, so we had good spots for photos. The wind seemed to die down, and the rain slowed to more of a mist. Needless to say, Beth and I were oooooing and awwwwing the whole time at how unreal the light was!

I think if you check out the photos, I won’t need to. I know Moraine is a super popular place to get photos. Lots of people elope there. But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t! It’s that way for a reason, and it’s incredibly beautiful, regardless of the weather. So if you’re willing to get up before the crack of dawn, then it’s a pretty good option!
