I love the mountains. They are my favorite, and where I love to spend the most time. However, I took a trip out to the badlands near Drumheller a couple of weeks ago, and wow, they are pretty neat! It’s like you’re just driving along through fields and prairies, and then out of nowhere, there they are. These cool hoodoos and clay/sand/rock forms jetting out everywhere. I actually don’t even know what the substance is… it’s kind of between sand and clay. I decided to hit up a few couples on instagram, and we headed out there last week for some couples sessions in the badlands.
The first couple arrived at about 8am, just as the sun was rising. There was a dusting of snow across the badlands, and the sky was painted with beautiful colours. It was chilly, but not unbearable. There were several other photographers with their tripods set up, taking photos of the sunrise. We slipped past them and started shooting.
My goal for these sessions in the badlands was to be creative
Test out different angles, and do example shots for my mentorships that are starting next year. Sometimes, with a strict timeline, I feel pressured into doing the things I always do, posing and directing the same way. This time, I made a point of stepping outside my comfort zone.
For these couples sessions in Drumheller, we had every kind of light you could imagine. From the beautiful morning sunrise glow, to full midday sun, to cloudy afternoon. It was great! That was exactly what I’d wanted to get some good variety in shots.
