Jess and Alex came all the way from Ontario for their hiking elopement in Kananaskis. They had never been to Western Canada before, let alone hiked up a mountain! Hiking in Ontario is a little different than hiking in Alberta. After lots of discussion, we settled on East End of Rundle for their elopement, and decided to do it at sunrise, as always. We took it slow going up, and enjoyed watching the backdrop of Ha Ling come into silhouette view as the first light started to glow to the east.

Cole Hofstra (Married by Cole), who happens to be the best hiking elopement officiant around, was also coming up for the ceremony for these two. He knew he’d be hiking a lot faster than us so he started hiking later. Suddenly, we heard someone coming up behind us quite fast. It was Cole! He told us we better hurry up if we wanted to make sunrise (haha). We were just fine, and made it to the lookout just in time for them to don their wedding attire, remove their boots, and get in place for the official part!

As everyone (including myself) always is, they were in awe of the absolute beauty of the views that unfolded before them when the sun started to rise. The backdrops in every direction were painted with the most perfect golden light. Cole performed the ceremony, adding in many personal aspects from Jess and Alex’s life. Then they said their personal vows, which are always my favorite part. Finally, the rings were exchanged and they were officially married!

One of the coolest parts of photographing intimate hiking elopements in Kananaskis, is that I often get to be a witness. It’s quite a thing to sign as witness for a couple I’ve never met before. But it also is a special opportunity and I’m always happy to help out in that way!
